tvOS is a locked-down platform. Unlike Fire TV or Android TV, you can't sideload APKs — every IPTV player has to come from the App Store. That's a good thing for security (no rogue APKs, no mirror-site malware) but a bad thing for choice. Here are the four players worth installing.
The four players that matter
Step 1 — Install from the App Store
- Open App Store on your Apple TV.
- Search for the player name (e.g. iPlayTV or IPTV Smarters Player).
- Click Get — iPlayTV charges $5.99, the others are free.
- Wait for the install to finish and launch from the home screen.
Step 2 — Add your playlist
In iPlayTV: click the + icon, choose M3U URL or Xtream Codes, paste credentials. In IPTV Smarters Player: tap Add New User, choose Xtream Codes API, enter name + username + password + URL.
Both apps sync playlists across devices via iCloud if you're signed in with the same Apple ID. So your iPhone and Apple TV pick up the same channels without re-entering credentials.
Step 3 — Configure EPG (optional)
Xtream Codes logins auto-pull EPG. For M3U-only setups, iPlayTV lets you paste an XMLTV URL separately under the playlist's settings. XMLTV URLs from your IPTV provider typically look like:
http://host.com:8080/xmltv.php?username=…&password=…http://host.com:8080/xmltv.php?username=…&password=…&type=7d(7-day guide)
