Why do IPTV services get blocked, and what can you do?

ISP blocks, app-store removals, and CDN takedowns all happen to IPTV. Here is why, and what actually helps.

If you've subscribed to IPTV for more than 6 months, you've probably lost access to something. IPTV services get blocked, removed, or disappeared in four ways — understanding the mechanism makes it obvious what does and doesn't help.

1. ISP-level domain blocking

UK (Premier League), Italy (AGCOM), France (ARCOM), Spain (LaLiga), and India issue court orders requiring ISPs to block specific IPTV domains. Your ISP returns NXDOMAIN or redirects to a "this site has been blocked" page. What helps: change your device's DNS to 1.1.1.1, 8.8.8.8, or 9.9.9.9 — or use a VPN.

2. App-store removal

LG pulled Smart IPTV from the webOS store in 2023. Roku regularly removes IPTV apps from the Channel Store. Google Play removes IPTV apps every few months. What helps: sideload from the app's official website (see our Firestick and LG webOS guides).

3. CDN / source takedown

Broadcasters file DMCA takedowns against the cloud provider hosting the IPTV streams. The provider reroutes to a new CDN hostname, which usually means your M3U URL stops working. What helps: switch to Xtream Codes (the hostname under the hood can rotate without breaking your login).

4. Upstream operator raid

Rare but catastrophic — the 2019 Xtream Codes raid in Italy disabled thousands of reseller services overnight. The 2024 MOHU raid in Spain had similar scope. What helps: nothing. The provider is gone. Pick a provider with a direct-operator model and a public brand to reduce this risk.
